Just my opinion: "Hipster" is a word that has been hijacked by people choosing to ignore its primal & primary social taproots, most importantly perhaps mid-20th century African American culture. Like most buzzwords, and co-opted language in particular, this word when brandished today tends to reveal more about those who use it in this manner than the perceived topic[s] supposedly being referred to. (Another example is the word "eclectic". Which speaks volumes about people who use it to describe what are considered unconventionally broad spectra of intelligence & interest.) When Allen Ginsberg invoked "angel headed hipsters" in the poem "Howl" he wasn't referring to people showing off or being conspicuously cryptic just to play games with other peoples' attention spans. In fact that behavior appears to have become even more common in the 21st century. The original meanings many of us still perceive in the word "hipster" include living in solidarity with socially marginalized groups & individuals - most importantly those who were & continue to be oppressed and exploited by a racially delineated caste system. Language is powerful magic. And we continue to hurl it around like confetti. - arwulf arwulf 11/12/13
